Generating traffic to your website is a must for your on-line business but so many people seem to get hung up on this one issue. It is not really that difficult, but it does take a bit of work. Here are a few low cost strategies that you can use, that will easily boost traffic to your website.

Have a forum.

If you have your own website’s discussion board or forum, you can invite people to visit and participate. The visits to your forum, also generates traffic to your website. Another benefit is that all the posts on your website’s forum will help to improve your search engines position, which will boost traffic to your website even further. People who visit your forum will also visit your website, hence driving massive amounts of volume to your website.

The Newsletter

Offer a newsletter or e-zine on your website and invite people to subscribe to your free e-zine. When people subscribe, they will give you their email address, building up your list. Every time they read your e-zine,  make sure it contains something that will make them to return to your site. This can be a gift or just the second half of a compelling article.

Bookmark

This is probably the simplest method but is so often overlooked. Invite your visitors to bookmark your website. This is particularly effective, if you can concentrate on also have high quality content on your website. It is not just about generating traffic, you have to try and encourage your visitors to come back. Make  people want to spend more time reading all the useful content on your site by promising updates and letting them know what other stuff you will be putting on. Tell them to bookmark your website now, in case they forget.

Get Your Stuff on other Websites

Give away free content to other web masters for them to add on their websites. The best way to do this is to submit your work to Article Directories for distributation. By allowing your visitors and other webmasters to use your articles on their own web site or in their e-zine,( including your resource box, of course), you are effectively advertising yourself through their web sites. In addition, why not allow your visitors to give away your online freebies,  that also include your website URL, thus again effectively multiplying your traffic.

Referrals

You can also ask your  visitors to refer your website to any of their friend(s), who they think may benefit from visiting your website. This again, will increase traffic to your website. There are plenty of free scripts for simple forms, that you can put on your website to do thisautomatically. All your visitor will have to do is fill in their friend's email address. Remember, make rhings as easy as you can for your guests.

Guest Book

Invite your visitors to sign your guest book. When people sign your guestbook, most will leave comments. Any sort of feedback that you receive will help you to improve your web site. This in turn will help you increase traffic to your web site by helping you in providing a useful website, that is tailored to your visitors desires.

Affiliate Program

Offer an affiliate program. Having hundreds of affiliates advertising your website is an effective way of generating traffic to your website. Try and get hold of a free copy of “Smartdd lite” from Frank Haywood which will allow you to sell digital products and pay out commission on auto-pilot.

Testimonials

Give some testimonials or product reviews, including your website URL, to websites that get high volumes of traffic. By having a testimonial on a website that is visited by thousands of people, you are getting free publicity and free advertising and traffic for your website.

Finally, remember to keep adding top content to your website on a regular basis, to keep your visitors coming back.

The Business of Marketing your Book from a Website

This item was filled under [ Self Published Books on Lulu ]

Is your idea of marketing your book  to have a sales page where people order your book or are sent to your Lulu sales page? If your basic “business” plan is to write articles and post links on forums to drive traffic to your Website and hope for the best. Well, in my book that is not a business that is a promotion.

To really turn your writing into a business you need to have two main separate systems in place. You may have perfected the first, "traffic generation", which is getting them in, but the second system must be one that is geared to keeping them, building their trust and have them come back.

Why is this so important? A customer is a customer, if they buy once, they will buy again and it is so,so, much easier to make a second sale.

A simple fact of selling on the Internet, is that it will cost you roughly over four times as much to make that first sale, in time and money than it will to sell to a repeat customer. That is why, to turn your writing into a successful web based business, you will need to be able to offer a steady progression of complimentary books, products and services.

In fact, cultivating a repeat customer is so important, that if you have to, you should even consider selling them stuff where you make little or no profit in those early days. This is because once they become long term high spending customers it will be worth it. This is the key, you are there for the long haul. The problems, the hassle and the hard work are all at the front end of a business, the real money is at the tail-end.

Building a search friendly website

This item was filled under [ Featured, Search Engine Optimisation ]

There are so many aspects of building a Search Engine friendly Website that it can seem daunting. No wonder so many people are running with open wallets to the growing amount of self styled experts, in the scramble for better listings. You will need to optimize your actual pages, have your meta tags, your page titles, your alt tags, your in-line links checked and when that is done you have to worry about your inbound links and of course, now their relevance and quality, (authority is the new buzz word).

Then we are into the time consuming realms of submitting to obscure directories, blagging articles, changing them and submitting them to Articles Website, posting on blogs, writing blogs, analyzing the competition and Social Media Marketing…………..

There is another rather radical strategy you can adopt and that is to build a really good Website, that will attract visitors simply because they want to visit it. This is not an excuse for bad design, it does not matter how good your content is if it is not "technically" user and search engine friendly, but surely this should be sorted out by the people that build the Website in the beginning?

What do I mean by "Search Friendly"? One point that is often overlooked is making the naming of your page urls understandable.
If you have a page about cleaning widgets on your site then call it www.mydomain.com/cleaning-widgets.html not www.mydomain.com/article36738agt.html. This makes it both search engine & user friendly, both been able to see its relevance. If someone bookmarks the link, uses it in a blog post or sends it to a friend, it becomes pretty obvious where the link is leading them and what the page will be about.

And when they get to your pages make sure that most of it is in HTML, all the search engines love plain text. They tend to ignore images, including fancy logos, video files, audio files and flash, so use them sparingly.

Some Website use the strategy of giving away bonus packages to entice the visitor to sign up for a newsletter or special membership area, logging in to view certain content. Search engines spiders/crawlers do not have membership to your Website, they do not even know how to fill out forms to find the content. If you want this content indexed by search engines you have a problem. If you must do this then one way is to create and install a bot friendly site map or produce enough of a sample of the content on the log-in page to keep the spiders happy.

Design your Website to be easily navigated by your visitors. If people can find the content they are looking for easily then there is a high probability that the spiders will find it and index it as well. Keep the structure as "Flat" as possible, as a general rule try not to have any content on your Website that is more than four clicks away. The more obstacles you have that stop the pages flowing easily, the more problems spiders will have and the less content will be indexed.

CONTENT BREEDS CONTENTMENT – Never loose sight of the fact that Good content is what your visitors are looking for, that is the reason d'etre of the search engines, to provide leads to good content related to the keywords their users input. Remember, the more content, the more opportunity to promote your keywords. Everybody moans about  the big search engines and their constant "improvements" in their "antilogarithms", how they are always moving the goalposts and fueling a bull market in new SEO firms that are springing up everywhere with new techniques.

THIS IS THEIR BUSINESS
, if search engine directories ever start to give out links to THEIR visitors that are not relevant, their customers simply go and use a different search engine. Wouldn't you constantly try to improve your business and stay that little bit ahead of the game? Yes of course there are tricks and cheats that you can employ to get higher rankings but at the end the day what you are really after is a long term sustainable business and this will only be achieved by providing good customer service. The true secret of a successful Website is simply doing things right.

When you are satisfied with the structure of your Website, concentrate on good content and everything else will follow. There will be no need to chase links, people will want to link to your site. These are the natural links that Google and their partners are looking for.

Create good, original content, do not fill your site with dozens of FREE articles that appear on hundreds of other Website as well. Aim to become an authority in your chosen field. This is the real definition of the Authority Website Google intended. This will lead to more links and brand awareness.

The true secret of a successful Website is simply doing things right.

Back Links

This item was filled under [ Featured, Search Engine Optimisation ]

So, you finally get someone to put a link on their website to you. Search Engine Heaven? Sadly unless you have taken some small but important steps, it seems the link is virtually useless as far as search engines go.

Google and their partners appartently now check to see if the links to your website are coming from pages with similar content, so it is very important to make sure your link is placed on a relevant page.

Also you must makes sure that you use your website keywords in the linking text, do not "waste it" with your company name. People & search engines are more interested in what you are offering, than who you are. Remember, "Relevant Words – to – Relevant Pages".

Not only that, if you can, get a link from a relevant website with a high Google Page Rank. These are trusted websites and by having them link to you, a bit of their goodwill rubs of on you, as far as the search engines are concerned. Do not be scared to email them an example of the Anchor Link as you would like them to use it.

If you intend to give them reciprocal link, the same rules apply to them and they will need their link on your page of similar content to their keywords. If they do not realise how this works then do them a favour and explain it. Watch out how many other links are on the page that is linking to you. In general the lower the number of other people they are linking to the better.

Another thing to be aware of when exchanging links is that the website you are linking to might use a "no follow tag". This tells the search engine web bots that although they are linking to you they do not wish to vouch for the integrity of your web pages. This usually results in the Search Engine ignoring the link.

On this point you may not realise it but Google apparently rates link exchanges between websites lower than one way links. So you will have to look for innovative ways to get these websites to link to you.

Finally, where the links are placed on the page could also be important. Apparently some "experts" believe that links from the top of a linking website page have more "weight" than links from the bottom of the same page, the same as keyword phrases in the heading of a page is believed to be better than the same phrase in the body text.

Conversely, recent discussions on SEO forums highlight the fact that linking tends to work best if it is part of the page text rather than an advertising link in the margins, header or footer of the page. Then again you never know when Google will change its mind…………

The Real Value of your Book

This item was filled under [ Blog, Featured, Self Published Books on Lulu ]

There is something that is not immediately apparent to budding authors and that is the real value of your book and the added financial advantages it will bring. I am not referring just to the typical 10% that you can expect from traditional publishers, (or the 20% to 90% that you could expect if you self publish), you can expect in earnings. What I would like to highlight here the “spin offs” that a book generates and that you as an author will accumulate.

First of all there is the enhancements it will bring to your social life with the dinner invitations and speaking engagements you are offered. As an author, your perceived standing will increase and as it does, so will the potential to raise your fees. If you are already earning an income from “Speaking” in some form, then having your name on a book, or better still, a series of books, (even as a joint author), will allow to charge more for your services. This is because people will see you differently. Do not be vain enough to think you are suddenly special or better. You are still the same person, but now you will be able to charge what you are really worth.

As an expert who has written a book, you will find it easier to write and get paid for newsletters and columns, you may even get asked for your comments by the media if your books have a bearing on a topical or current event. You will be able to charge for consulting in your chosen field, hold workshops and chair events. In fact, you will find that just been an author will open many new doors for you both socially and financially. If you already support a charity, the added prestige of being an author will allow you to give even more back to the community.

These are just some of the often unconsidered benefits of writing a book, that should figure into your decisions and long term plans when choosing the topics of your writing. When you start writing your books, you must think where you want to be in five years time, and if your chosen subject will take you there, be it lecturing or conventions. If you are writing with a mind to financial success, you must make the hard decision about how much “mileage” your book will have.

Writing a book is not just a creative process of self discovery that will change you internally. It will also produce unexpected benefits and changes to your life, both financially and socially.

This is the real value your book holds for you.

The key ingredient to any successful business venture

This item was filled under [ Blog ]

What you about to learn here is probably the most powerful and key ingredient to any successful business venture. If this simple principle is adhered to, it will make the difference between failing, being mediocre or being very successful.

Before you start any “Business” Project, you must first construct a “Plan” of what you intend to do. This is vital and you will be surprised how many people tend to make it up as they go a long or try to “Wing it” for a bit, before sitting down and doing this absolutely critical part of any venture. There is a very old and true saying that goes “Plan your work and then work your plan”.

Take your time with this and give it some thought. Like writing a book, you will only have to do it once but the work you put in has the potential to bring you a financial return for the rest of your life.

A good “Plan” will consist of three interrelated parts:
1. A Goal
2. The Strategy
3. The Tactics

If you do not know the difference between “Strategy” and “Tactics”, it is very important to learn. In it's basic format the “Goal” is the place you are aiming to arrive at. The “strategy” is the map and route you intend to take and finally the “tactics” are the methods that you will use to get there.

Lets us expand the analogue of the journey and hope that it becomes clearer for you.

The Goal
Remember our “Plan” is composed of three distinct parts. Say that the Goal is to reach somewhere like Paris by the end of the Month. In describing this goal, we have already defined one condition, the time it will take. We could add another condition and say we want to do this as cheaply as possible. We write this down and record it, as this now dictates our strategy, which comes next.

The Strategy
In developing our strategy, we must constantly refer to our Goal to see if it meets the conditions we set. So, let say that the easiest way to travel to Paris would be in our own vehicle. This would adequately satisfy the time restraint but what about the cost. Perhaps we could purchase a second hand vehicle and sell it when we arrive in Paris to recoup the costs? Now we formalise the strategy and work out the route, where we stop and in this case also the budget, enabling us to see what sort of vehicle we can afford. These are the constraints and requirements that we need for the next and final piece of the plan, the tactics.

The Tactics

So now we draw up our tactics this will include purchasing a vehicle, fuel, provisions and everything we will need for the trip.

See how each part of the planning helps to lay the foundation for the part following it, this is very important and I will try to make that clear. In a good business the strategy dictates the tactics and never, never the other way around. This is why it is so important to learn how to differentiate between Strategy and Tactics.

This business skill alone can make the difference between a mediocre and a successful business. For example supposing you met someone on the way to Paris who was willing to pay you for a lift but it would take you out of your way, to take them where they wanted to go. This would be a change of tactics and might seem like a good idea.

When you consult your strategy you find that it will take extra fuel and increase your costs, it will take extra time and affect your time table, throwing out your schedule. Instead of concentrating on your goal, you are now contemplating becoming a Taxi service. This change in tactics will adversely affect your overall strategy and in turn delay you from achieving your goal. You must never let tactics dictate your strategy.

How often do you plan to do something and get distracted, we all do. Normally there is not much harm done and we eventually get back on track but in business these decisions can be crucial. How often do you get tempted to buy an amazing new piece of software to make you business easier. You had not realised you needed it till it was pointed out.

What do you do next? You look for a way to use the software. You let your tactics, dictate your strategy. Some people spend there life buying new bits of clever software and spend a proportionately greater time trying to find a use for them.

Once you have your plan and are working it, do not get distracted by things like this. New software, new methods, new reports. You have already worked out what you need to do. If it is not dictated by your strategy, you do not need any more “new” tactics. They will only prove to be a waste of time and money.

That is not to say that they would not be valuable and useful to someone, just not to you. They will only make you take your eye off the ball. So, I think we can add to that old adage we mentioned earlier and say Plan your work, work your plan and Stick to your plan”

Example: Plan to be a successful author

As a practical example let us construct a “Plan” to become a successful Author. For a “Goal” let us say that we have decided that our definition of a successful author is one who earns an above average amount of money but also has enough spare time to research and travel. For this amount of financial and social freedom you will probably have to self publish and exercise some degree of control over selling your books, but you will not want it to take up to much of your time in day to day running.

So, here we have defined our “Goal” and certain conditions that will define our strategy. Write this down fully, as six months, a year or five years down the line, you might want to review your target. As circumstances change you will find a reminder of your thinking invaluable.

As a Strategy you might next decide that the easiest way to fill the criteria you set in your “Goal” is to write a series of books. These could be sold on-line from your own Website, which could be set to sell on automatic pilot thereby relieving you from the day to day selling tasks. This will also give you the ability to Log in and check your Website from anywhere in the world you happen to be, while on your travels. Similarly, you could accept payments into an on-line bank.

These decisions will dictate your tactics that come next, slowly moving from the general to the particular. As before you now have a permanent record of how you arrived at your choices and how they came about, which you will find extremely useful in the future.

Next you must plan your tactics. This is the nuts and bolts of the operation and this will read like a shopping list. For instance you will need some decent word processing software to write your books and ways of recording your research. You will need a Website and a host. A way of converting your book into Digital Format An Automatic Digital Delivery Service like “SmartDD” to accept payments, deliver your books and send pre written follow up emails. An on-line Bank account like Paypal to accept payments.

You could also offer “Hardback” and “Paperback” versions of your work through Print on Demand Services like Lulu.com. You could also offer a CD version or even Audio versions of your book through Kunaki.com. You can increase your market by cross selling, making sure that links to all your products are available in everything you sell.

Remember that all these services are accessed on-line through you Website making the entire selling process on automatic, 24 hours a day, seven days week, 12 months a year.

The Great Secret

The great secret of achieving success has nothing to do with being clever, there are plenty of poor intelligent people in the world. It has nothing to do with the start you have in life. I have seen people rise from the gutter to become successful and those from wealthy backgrounds inherit fortunes and loose them just as quickly. You might believe that the secret is hard work and it is in part but there are plenty of people in the world that have no choice but to work hard ever day of their life, just to barely survive and with never even getting a wisp of the opportunities you have.

No, the one thing that successful people have in common is they are “focused”. They set themselves a goal, they draw up their plan, and come what may, they do not stop till they achieve it. They decide what they want and they go for it, without letting anything distract them. This is real Magic Ingredient, whether it is writing, setting up a business, whatever. Focus on it, do it to the best of your ability. Put in your full effort, you owe this to yourself if you want badly enough to succeed. Remember you only have to do this once. Do it right and it will be giving you a return for the rest of your life.

Having sorted out your “business” plan, the next thing you need to sort out is your “Marketing” plan using the same system again. Define your Goal, your Strategy and your Tactics.

Have you got what it takes to become successful on the internet?

This item was filled under [ Blog ]

There is only one way to be successful in selling on-line and that is by hard work. You know as well as I do that persistence and dedication are the two qualities that are needed to succeed in anything. The great thing about the Internet is that you stand just as much chance as making it as the big corporation, because at the end of the day, it is down to how good is your website.

Here it does not matter how big you are but how much effort you put into learning as much as you can and making it the best website you can. The good news is there is a lot of help out there and compared to other start up businesses, selling on-line can be started very cheap. There are literally millions of customers out there, and in theory all you have to do is build a website business that they will want to buy from.

There are also lots of people out there trying to sell you ready made businesses, apparently they run themselves, 24 hours a day, no stock, affiliate based income, you can go to sleep, on holiday and still earn money……..

Just stop and think about this a minute, would you invest your hard earned money in buying a shop, fill it with cheap stock, put part time assistants behind the counter and then go holiday and have them  post you the cheque?

Would you expect to come back to a thriving business. Anyway is this what you really want? Anyway if these businesses are so great why are'nt the sellers, lying on a beach somewhere reaping the rewards rather than constantly bombarding you with these tempting offers?

To succeed in on-line selling you have to work hard and work smart to create a website that will attract visitors, a website that people will want to buy from.

You have to work hard to make sure that they are happy and that they will want to come back. You have to give them such a good service, have such a content rich site that they not only keep coming back but they tell their friends as well.

Here is a unique opportunity, you can reach millions of customers around the world. At the other end of your keyboard is a direct sales channel to the future customers of your business. If you wanted to reach even a tiny proportion of this customer base in the past, you would have to produced thousands of catalogues, get them produced, printed and delivered. Even if you had gone the direct mail shot route, it would have taken a terrific outlay in time and money. Think about it, Millions of potential customers a few clicks away.

This has got to be worth a little bit of effort on your part. The difference between successful selling online and a mediocre business is not what they sell but how hard they work to sell it.

I am sorry if this is not the answer that you wanted to hear but it is the truth.

You could try selling Five Pound Notes for a Pound but unless people know how and where to find your website and that you are making this amazing offer, you simply will not sell any.

You need to be constantly improving your website and promoting it. So the simple answer is, in a world wide market, with millions of potential customers you can sell also most anything. The really important factor is not what you sell but how you go about selling it.

First you should decide on what sector of the public you want to sell to. This strategy is called "Niche" marketing. Work to develop a niche website and then sell to your visitors products they want to buy. The most important factor here is firstly the actual size of the niche you are appealing to and secondly, the strengths of your competition.

Ideally you should try and find a niche market that is small enough for you to dominate but large enough to provide you with good sales. For instance if you decided to become an Antiquarian bookseller, you would be facing a lot of established traders with huge stocks. What if you searches through the book collectors forums disclosed that there was a big following for Rumanian Folk Dancing books. You would stand a very good chance of becoming THE website for Rumanian Folk Dancing but to keep your customers satisfied you would also have to post articles, news, club meeting dates, as well as selling them the books you have sourced.

So, here is a very important tip, choose a niche that you are really interested in yourself. Building up a successful website will still be hard work but you will enjoy it. Those people that I have met that get up in the morning and look forward to the day's work because they are doing something they love are among the happiest and vibrant people I have met. They have all told me they feel truly blessed.

Master Resale Rights – There is a sucker born every minute

E books have been around for quite a long time and unfortunately the massive range in prices do not often bear any relationship to the quality of your purchase, which could range from incredibly useful to utter crap. The bottom end of the market used to be inundated with so called ”viral marketing” products that were solely designed to spread the name of the authors Website. It got so bad that one of its biggest market places, EBay decided to ban all digital downloads. So, what has changed?

Suddenly every body has become aware of ‘Master Resale Rights’. If you buy a book with MRR , not only are you allowed to sell and keep all the profit but the person you sell it to does as well. Yes, if you buy an e book that has Master Resale Rights, you can sell it on yourself from your Website or blog and you can sell as many copies as you like, keeping all the profits.

This means as soon as you sell a copy of the e-book you have bought, you have your money back and break even. Sell another copy and you double your money, sell a third one and treble it and so on. Where else can you get 100%, 200%, 300%……1000% back on your investment. In theory the profit you can make is unlimited, you can sell for the rest of your life! Much more lucrative than all those “Affiliate schemes”.

So now, a big game of “Pass the Parcel” has started and logic would dictate that eventually someone at the end of the line is going to get stuck with a copy they cannot sell but it does not look like that is going to happen any time soon. In fact, there are still more people joining the Internet everyday and the global market is so big, that in the long term, you may even have to take into account new customers are been born every minute somewhere in the world. Anyway with some MRR e-books selling for as little as $7 dollars it is quite worth the risk.

Another factor that has come into play is a lite  version of the Auto Pilot digital system “Smartddlite”, that once cost $60 – $90 dollars has been made available by the developer Frank Haywood to anyone who subscribes to his blog.  This nifty bit of software allows you to sell  e-books automatically from your Website or Blog 24/7, even when you are sleep or on vacation and even allows you to send a pre drafted, follow up email with links to your other offers. You find his blog here http://www.frankhaywood.com

As selling MRR E books spreads across the Website and blogs of the world, it is been followed by a massive rise in the sale of PLR (Private Label Rights), as more books are written to meet the demand. Also some savvy Website entrepreneurs will realize they can make even more money by producing and selling their own MRR books as every body starts looking for something different to sell.

Personally, I think this is great, there is nothing wrong with spreading the wealth around a bit and I am hopeful that as the competition increases, we will see better quality and better value books being produced and that is just what the Internet needs.

Here is a selection of some of the best books that have been self published using the services of Lulu.com The key distinguishing characteristic of self-publishing is the absence of a traditional publisher. Instead the creator or creators fulfil this role, taking editorial control of the content, arranging for printing, marketing the material, and often distributing it, either directly to consumers or to retailers. There are several other difficulties faced by self- and small-publishers. One of the greatest is that book stores cannot afford to deal with tens of thousands of small publishing companies. They tend to buy from the larger publishers, distributors, and wholesalers. If you love books as I do, then I am going to ask you to think about seeking out and buying the occasional self published book. This is not just because I really believe you will enjoy reading them but also because these writers and authors need you support and encouragement. Self Publishing deserves to survive and thrive.
