Born in Georgia in 1848 he work as a Printer's apprentice and then as a journalist before writing his "Uncle Remus" stories. Although they were originally published in the"Atlanta Constitution" these lovely tales which were based on the folkstories and folksongs of freed black slaves, went on to be issued in book form, in 1880. It was such a success that many sequels followed.
