These famous German Brothers were collectors of Folktales. They both studied at Marburg University where they developed their interest in German traditional stories. The first English edition of their work appeared under the title of "German Popular Stories". It was illustrated by George Cruikshank and translated by Edgar Taylor and published by C Baldwin as a pair of volumes around 1825. The next version was published in 1846 by John Murray but this time illustrated by the Fairy artist Richard Doyle which established it as a children's classic. Since then many versions have appeared, many illustrated by famous artists, including Arthur Rackham, Charles Robinson, Mabel Lucie Atwell and Kay Nielsen, which are all eagerly sought after by their collectors.
