This renowned novelist also published four children's picture books. The original versions published in 1946, 1950,1952 & 1953 were all illustrated by Dorothy Craigie. They were all re-issued by The Bodley Head in the early 1970's with new illustrations by Edward Ardizzone. Although all four are highly sort after by his collectors, the first one, "The Little Train", which he published anonymously with Eyre & Spottiswoode in 1946 remains the most valuable .
