Suffering a long illness throughout his childhood in Cheshire, he went on to Oxford where he read classics. He wrote his first fantasy novel "The Weirdstone of Brisingamen" which was published by Collins in 1963 at the age of 22. Over a dozen of similar quality were to follow.
