He worked in the Medical Corp during the Second World War and then as a hospital lab technician until becoming a full time writer in 1966. Although he originally intended it for adults, he rewrote his first novel and aimed it at younger readers after advice from his editor. Lots of historically based adventures followed. "Jack Holborn", which was illustrated by Antony Maitland was first published in 1964 by Constable.
