Is often credited with been the first of the modern writers of "School Girls' Stories" where the tale is often written from the characters' point of view. She was born in Preston in 1868 and attended Manchester High School. From there she went to Ellersie College for Girls and then to Heatherley to study art. Although her many books, which started with "The Fortunes of Philippa" published by Blackie in 1907, are sought after by collectors, she had previously helped illustrate another book, "A Terrible Tomboy" that was published by Gay & Bird in 1904, which is prized as her most valuable book.
