He worked as a cameraman for the BBC before becoming a full time writer after the success of his first book, "A Bear Called Paddington". This was published by Collins in 1958 accompanied with delightful illustrations from the artist Peggy Fortnum. When he found his stride, he went on to find success with other characters he invented, including Olga Da Polga, Thursday and Parsley the Lion, who like Paddington also got his own television show.
