Alfred Bestall
Born in Mandalay Burma in 1892. After studying at the Central School of Art London, he went on to illustrate for "Punch" Magazine, Books by Blyton and some classics by Dumas. He took over from Mary Tourtel illustrating the "Rupert" strip in the Daily Express in 1935. He continued developing the much loved little bear and his friends right up until 1973. In 1985 he was awarded the MBE and he died a year later in 1986.
