Frank L Baum
An American author born in New York in 1856. After a varied career, he wrote his first children's book in 1897. "Mother Goose in Prose" was followed three years later with "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", as a fitting book for the new century. He wrote many more fantasies for children including more "Oz" book. After an untimely death in 1919, the torch was picked up by Ruth Plumly Thompson and John R Neill who added more books to the series.
As expected, the most desirable of his books you could find would be a first edition of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", illustrated by W W Denslow and published by Hill, U.S. in 1900. Some collectors have paid over £25,000 for a copy in very good condition. Another of his most sort after books is the "Woggle-Bug Book" that was published by Reily & Britton, U.S. in 1905. A copy of this book in very good condition changes hands between collectors at just over £1000.
