Gillian Avery
She was born in Surrey in 1929 and after working as a reporter became an illustration editor for the Clarendon Press. She published her first book, "The Warden's Niece" in 1957 with Collins and continued writing until 1983. She demonstrates a great affinity for recapturing the spirit of the Victorian age and many of her books are set in this period. The "Wardens Niece", illustrated by Dick Hart, as her first book remains the most sought after of her works.
