Free Web Authoring System

Product Review

Nvu is a complete web authoring system like the better known FrontPage and Dreamweaver that is cross-platform and works on Linux desktop as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh. Now anybody can create and manage a website without to much technical expertise or an in depth knowledge of HTML. If you can create a document in a wordprocessor you will have the ability to create a website using this software. The NVU Web editing program is all you need to build a personal or small business site, and the program is easy to use. And of course it's free!

The great thing is even though it was designed with novices in mind it can also be used by experienced web designers that wish to save time when creating content or knocking up a basic website design.

It allows you to quickly change between "What You Can See" Mode (WYSIWYG) and HTML code by just changing a tab which is great for learning HTML and seeing what effects changing the code has on your web page design.

Its main features include WYSIWYG editing making creating a web page as easy as typing a letter with your word processor. It allows you to login to your web site and navigate through your files, editing web pages on the fly, directly from your site. It also has a powerful support for forms, tables, and templates. You can check it out here.

How to Set up your own Website

1. First Purchase a Domain Name.
The "www.mywebsite.com" name for your website that will show up in the top of your browser window is called a "Domain Name". These are sold by Domain Registrars that you can find with your search engine. When you find a name nobody else s using you usually pay for them yearly.

2. Sign up with a Web Hosting Service
A Web Server or Web Hosting Service will hold the files that make up your website and make it available to visitors on the internet.

3. Create your Website
Now you must actually build your website using a Web authoring system like NVU. Start off simple and remember you can always improve it as you gain more experience. Remember4 to keep all the files related to your website in one folder, including any images you want to use. Those pictures can be in .gif, .jpg, and .png format. Ember not to leave any spaces in your file names and do not use capital letters.

4. Publish your Website
Now all you have to do is get the files from your computer to your web host server using some FTP software.

5. Tell people about your website
Contact all your friends and give them the web address (this is called the URL) of your website. You can paste the link in an email. You can also list it in the search engines.
