TurboCash is a free accounting software program that is licensed under the GPL/LGPL licensing system. There are over 32,000 businesses around the world using this multi-user, multi-company accounting system making this fully featured piece of kit,one of the most popular book keeping software around. It popularity in part, is due to lack of expensive fees to pay. You just download it, register it and start using it, no strings attached. It has some impressive features that allow you to create up to 999 sets of books, with a General Ledger and other modules that include a cashbook, customers, suppliers, inventory, report writer, point of sale, ecommerce and even a Payroll system.
It can handle up to 64,000 stock items, which is especially handy if you intend building an Ebook Empire :). You can also use it to manage up to 40,000 debtor/creditor accounts and up to 10 bank accounts where you can put your profits.
If you are trading on-line it is especially useful with its ability to synchronize your web shop with your general ledger using OS Commerce. It allows Internet access for processing transactions from remote websites and allows quick entry using barcodes and scanners.
As well as comprehensive system context-sensitive help, there is also T-accounts view which enables even non accountants to quickly grasp the state of their business. That is not to imply that it is lightweight by any means as it is also capable of producing sophisticated sets of reports that allow an in-depth analysis of Sales.
