Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is cross platform software and is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Audacity can also be used for post-processing of all types of audio, including podcasts. It can be used for finishing podcasts by adding effects such as normalization, trimming, and fading in and out.
It supports a wide variety of file types including being able to import and export WAV, AIFF, MP3 and all the file format supported by libsndfile library. It can be used to record and play sounds that can then be edited with cut, copy and paste functions including multi-track mixing.. There is a large amount of digital effects and plug-ins for the software with the ability to support additional effects written with Nyquist.
It can also be used to convert records and cassette tapes into digital tracks. It does this by automatically splitting the track into multiple tracks based on the silences in the track and the export multiple option.
Another useful function is that it can be used to synchronize an audio tracks speed while maintains its pitch. This allows you to make precise adjustments to the run-time of a track allowing you to mesh it seamlessly to the video.
The software works works on Windows, ( 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista, but not Windows 95 and NT), Mac OS X and Unix like systems including GNU/Linux and BSD.
